Hot stone massage, Milk Day Spa, $130
It's the latest in pampering but the preliminaries are familiar: a form about my medical history, new-age music and a candle-lit change room in which to don a bathrobe, pink slippers and disposable knickers. Francesca will be looking after me today.
Here, at the unrestricted parking end of Glenmore Road, the brown bombers never roam, so I'm relaxed already - and the hot stone massage is yet to come. I can tell from Francesca's gentle Italian accent and equally gentle hands that we are going to get on. She puts a warm wheat bag on my back "to relax the muscles", and begins to massage my feet with a light oil, working her way up the right leg, then the left, then the back using just her hands.
I'm no geologist but the stones, when they emerge from their hot-water bath, appear to be basalt: black, palm-sized and smooth. As Francesca slides them over my oiled back, the sensation is like her hands, only warmer and weightier. The effect is hypnotic. As with all good therapists, Francesca's low, calm voice is heard only in answer to questions.
Some centres just rest the warm stones on you. Here they are part of the massage, smoothing and soothing, the heat and weight working into the muscles. This is a relaxing massage, Francesca says, but for something more detoxifying, I should try the Dead Sea mud treatment: "It's really beautiful".
Towards the end she focuses on my shoulders and neck, where there is "a lot of tension". I lie on my back and the hands and stones - it's hard to tell which - glide up, down, around, up, down, around. I drift into a wakeful trance, emerging when Francesca tinkles a set of tiny bells "Tibetan", she explains. Many clients, apparently, fall asleep - "especially the men". It's hard to imagine sleeping through an hour of bliss that costs $130. I guess the rich really are different.
